L&R 2009 YEAR END REPORT

From Chair, Bill Leonard

Dear Residents,

As 2009 comes to an end, I would like to summarize some significant accomplishments your L&R Committee and Management made during the year.  Our goal continues to maintain the Shores as a first class community, while upgrading our facilities with cost effective improvements.

FINANCE:    The year will complete with a $100,000 budget under run!  This cost savings will be returned to your homeowner associations.  Even with operational costs rising in the Coronado area, your L&R Committee has budgeted 2010 about $130,000 less than the 2009 L&R budget.  These operational savings will reduce each association’s funding requirement for L&R in 2010.

ENERGY CONSERVATION:     Street and sidewalk lighting has been changed from high pressure sodium lights to new technology induction lights. The savings is over $5,000 annually.   This improvement comes at a time when the current sodium bulbs were nearing their end of life, and, SDG&E electrical energy costs are rising.  The heating cost for the four pools was reduced 22% and saved $15,000.

LANDSCAPE:      Significant improvements were made to the landscaping near the entrances of all buildings. In addition, the landscaping was improved in the pools and at selected areas throughout the community.

SECURITY:     Easy Lobby, a computer based software system, was installed in the front gatehouse kiosk and in the lobbies of each building. This system has improved the processing of visiting guests.  A revised set of Rules for our common area facilities was formulated and approved for the Shores.  A significant security improvement requiring all ID Cards to have photos of residents and guests will greatly improve security and access to our facilities, especially during the summer and holiday seasons.

ADMINISTRATION:     The L&R Office was opened Saturdays and Sundays during the busy summer months. The L&R Committee has agreed to open the L&R Office on weekends all year ‘round to accommodate residents and their guests.  Weekend hours will be 9am to 1pm.  Monthly Safety Meetings were held to improve performance, especially among the Maintenance Staff.

TENNIS IMPROVEMENTS:       Courts 7 & 8 were re-surfaced.  All courts have now been resurfaced.  The tennis court shed was replaced. New benches were added at most courts. A windscreen was added between courts 2/3 & 4/5.

HEALTH CLUB:    Upgrades were made to treadmills, ellipticals, stationery bikes, HD televisions, and spa heaters.

POOLS:    $13,000 was spent to upgrade the pool furniture in all four pool areas.  The pool drain covers were replaced to make them safer per new laws.

ENTRANCE LETTERS:    The Coronado Shores’ entrance letters were upgraded to a silver color and powder coated for durability.

ON BEHALF OF the L&R Committee and its employees, I wish all of our residents a Happy, Safe, Healthy, and Prosperous New Year!

LANDSCAPE ADVISORY GROUP

Happy New Year to everyone at Coronado Shores from the L&R Landscape Advisory Group (commonly known as the LAG)!

Here we are in the New Year 2010. It's hard to believe that a decade has passed since the turn of the 21st Century. Does anyone remember the Millennium Bug that was supposed to cause the end of the World as the clock turned over from Midnight on December 31, 1999, to the new century and millennium on January 1, 2000? Boy, what a non-event that was!

Anyway, 2009 was an interesting and productive year for the LAG. We undertook and completed several projects designed to improve the landscape appearance at the Shores. These have all been achieved at quite a reasonable cost. Oh, we had a few things that didn't work out and certain other projects that remain touch-and-go (we are keeping our fingers crossed), but on the whole very good progress was made.

The efforts of our group in 2010 will be guided strongly by Felicia's Law. What? A TV drama? No, Felicia's Law is the label we have attached to a very simple and elegant observation made by one of our very active members, Felicia Bell (from La Sierra Tower). Felicia noted that whenever a collection of landscape plantings within a moderately close field of vision (say up to a distance of about 30 feet) includes more than three plant species, it will look cluttered. In other words, it will be a hodgepodge (one of our favorite words), and hence likely to be jarring rather than appealing. Various members of LAG have tried applying Felicia's Law from their own perspectives and they report that it works remarkably well. So, why don't you, the readers of the L&R Newsletter, give it a try and see what you think?

This year we are implementing a new feature in the LAG, namely the opportunity for you, our residents, to provide feedback to us via the Internet on anything and everything that comes to mind (positive or negative) concerning Coronado Shores’ landscaping and landscaping activities of the LAG. We won't promise that we will be able to respond or react to each message received, but we guarantee that everyone in the LAG will read your comments, and that they will be given serious consideration in our deliberations. So, please send your comments by e-mail to: Donald L. Smith, Chair LAG smithdonevelyn@gmail.com
