LANDSCAPE
ADVISORY GROUP
Summer is here and our seasonal
residents are arriving to enjoy the beauty and charms of Coronado, and especially Coronado
Shores. This seems like a good opportunity to
offer some background information about the Coronado Shores Landscape Advisory Group to
the L&R Committee. Its mission is to
undertake whatever steps are necessary to nurture the landscaping environment and to
ensure it will continue to give everyone great pleasure over the years to come, all the
while helping to enhance the investment value of our property. Each association is represented in this group by at
least one member. The group meets monthly,
usually on the Monday before the L&R Committee meeting.
A number of sub-groups have been formed to address specific issues,
scheduling working meetings that include walk around inspections of the grounds. The Landscape Advisory Group has several projects
in progress some short term and others long term which fall into the
following categories: 1) Maintenance Issues; 2) Remedial Issues; and, 3) Long Term Issues. The following factors are kept in mind: 1) Prudent
use of budgeted funds; 2) Water conservation; 3) Consistent and appropriate landscaping
themes to avoid a hodgepodge effect; 4) Preservation of treasured views; and, of course 5)
Overall beauty. Given the variety of tastes
and wide range of opinions, it is not always easy to reach a consensus, but the group
adheres to democratic principles majority rules with respect for the minority.
Several major challenges face this group. During planning for the Renovation Project, owners
expressed a preference for lush, tropical landscaping.
However, Coronado has a temperate Mediterranean climate with an average
10 of rainfall, so the climate is not conducive.
Our region is dependent on distant water resources, so water is a scarce and
expensive commodity and restrictions are emerging. Also,
the adjacent ocean brings wind and salt spray. Gradually,
the Shores must migrate toward landscaping in tune with our environment. This will be done slowly and cautiously to avoid
mistakes and control costs and with an eye toward preserving what works, only replacing
certain plant species that are clearly not doing well.
Another challenge is how to address the issue of legacy trees and shrubs
dating from more than 30 years ago. Some
specimens have outgrown their natural life expectancy or usefulness, and many have become
a hazard, leading to a need for drastic pruning or removal.
Appropriate replacements have to be researched well in advance. A final challenge concerns trees largely
tall palm trees that block views of bay and ocean from lower floor units. These are being systematically addressed by the
Landscape Advisory Group in consultation with the L&R Committee, L&R Management,
the Landscape Contractor, and individual associations.
In doing so, the Landscape Advisory Group keeps the long-range best
interests of our community uppermost in mind. |
TENNIS
INTEREST GROUP
Are you a current resident or new
arrival looking for playing partners? A list
will be created and shared so that players with similar playing abilities can find a
partner for singles or doubles. A ball
machine is available for use by residents and their invited guests. A short training session is required before it can
be used. Instructional sessions are generally
held once a week. The Tennis Interest Group is
looking for new members who would like to be involved with planning and organizing tennis
activities at our courts. Membership also
provides the opportunity to propose and comment on various policies concerning the
operation and maintenance of our tennis facilities. Meetings
are held approximately six times per year. Would
you like to volunteer? For more information on
any of the above, contact Tennis Interest Group Chair, Mike Brennan, at 619/ 522-0042.
