ENFORCEMENT COMMITTEE NEWS

The concrete lagoon bridges have been found to have spalling on the underside.  A structural engineer conducted an inspection and found there was no life or safety issue.   His report recommended certain spalling repairs.  Bids were taken and McCarron Restoration was selected to make the repairs.  The work was started February 23 and should last two weeks.   Then, the lagoon will be refilled with water.

ATTENTION LAP SWIMMERS

While the El Camino Pool is not heated, the Beach Club Pool will be opened at 6:00 a.m. for lap swimmers only, until 8:30 a.m. when the Beach Club Pool is used for Water Aerobics.

HELPFUL HINT FOR POOL USERS

Some residents find the re-checking of Coronado Shores’ ID by the Patrol Officer to be disruptive and unnecessary.  If you do not want to be bothered, it has been suggested that you visibly display your Coronado Shores’ ID so the Patrol Officer does not need to disturb you after an initial check.  Sounds reasonable.  Let’s give it a try.

TENNIS COURT UPGRADES

The project to resurface Courts 7 & 8 is still on track and work should be completed in March depending on weather conditions.  They will be resurfaced in the same manner as Courts 1-6, and, the new colors will match.  The new surface will have a medium speed and could be scuffed if tennis shoes are not worn.  Running shoes with black soles are not permitted.

LANDSCAPE ADVISORY GROUP

Landscaping improvements have recently been made to the South Campus entryway.  Improvements will soon be made to the area between Las Flores and La Princesa using a combination of miniature magnolias, palms, flax, and ground cover.  Design work for a Shores’ perimeter landscaping upgrade has been completed.  Use will be made of the bougainvillea and hibiscus to add significant color along the perimeter wall.  A design upgrade for the northeast corner of the Shores (del Sol) will incorporate birds of paradise, flax, and gaillardia flowers.  Work on installing these upgrades is anticipated to begin in March.  Two new books have been acquired for use in future landscape planning.  One on palms is published by the Southern California Palm Society.  The second addresses designing landscapes with drought-resistant succulent plants.  The location of all Australian Coral trees in the complex has been mapped and a potential replacement ornamental shade tree will be selected as a contingency specimen for each location.  However, no Coral tree will be removed unless it is deemed to be an imminent hazard to the community.

HEALTH CLUB

A new rowing machine has been purchased and installed at the Health Club.   New floor mats have been installed around the spas in the locker rooms..

NEW FITNESS CENTER

The Coronado Shores Fitness Center Interest Group continues to refine information and gather additional support for our intended future site.  Please join us at our next meeting on March 25 at 4:30 p.m. in the Underground.

TENNIS INTEREST GROUP

Unfortunately, due to a low number of players available to play in the round robin tournament scheduled for February 14, the event was canceled.  A determination will be made whether to try and organize another round robin this Winter, or wait until next Summer when more players are likely to be available.

Also, just a reminder that a ball machine is available for use by Shores’ residents.  For safety reasons, players must attend a short training session before it can be reserved for use.  There is no charge to use the machine, but players are requested to donate a can of new tennis balls each time they use the machine.  If you have been certified to use the machine, call the Health Club at 435-2533 to reserve it.   If you would like to attend a training session, contact Mike Brennan at 522-0042.

FEBRUARY L&R ACTIONS

v           Year to date, Net Operating Income is favorable.  Total Utilities are favorable by less than $300 despite energy conservation efforts as rates have increased 15-20%.  $2,827.35 of the $169,600 Capital Replacement budget was spent in the Health Club during January.

v           Unfavorable Variances in 2008 were primarily the result of budgeting for 26 pay periods when there were actually 27.  An estimated 2008 refund should be known at the March meeting.

v           The L&R General Manager was given the discretion to waive the requirement for a Special Events Officer for Roeder parties that meet certain criteria, as a test until the March meeting.

v           There are both surface and significant cracks in the walls along the boardwalk.  A team has been put together to evaluate the extent of the cracks.

v           No action was taken to heighten the walls at the northeast and southeast corners, at this meeting.

v           No action was taken to change the lettering of the main entrance signage, at this meeting.

v           Gloria Cady resigned as Chair of the Recreation Advisory Group.  Ed Sack was appointed to Chair this group and report at L&R meetings.

v           L&R reviewed proposed changes to the following Rules & Regulations: I. Access to Recreation Facilities; IV. Pool Areas; V. Swimming Pools, Wading Pools and Spas; VIII. Beach Club; XI. Vehicles – Parking and Access; and, an Enforcement Policy.   Certain proposed changes were agreed to and will be taken back to association boards.  A Notice with specific changes will be available to each association for distribution to their owners.  If there are further modifications at the March meeting, a vote will be taken at the April meeting.

v           A new vehicle decal for residents was approved.  After a printing estimate is obtained, new 2010 vehicle decals for residents will be printed and issued beginning ASAP in 2009.

v           A new Violation Citation Booklet was approved.  A new procedure will be created and implemented.

v           New Holiday and Weekend work schedules will be proposed for the busier Summer months.   Manager work schedules may be adjusted to provide Holiday and Weekend supervision.

v           Time and effort will be devoted to Emergency Planning and Management during 2009.
