WINTER ENERGY CONSERVATION PROJECT POOL SCHEDULE

POOL DATES

Cabrillo November 3 – December 7

Roeder December 8 – January 11

El Camino January 12 – February 15

Beach Club February 16 – March 29

During the times noted above, the pools/spas/wading pools at each pool area will not be heated to conserve energy. It is estimated that 17,500 gas therms will be conserved, and, electricity kilowatt hours will be monitored. The pool areas will be open throughout, the pool equipment will be running, and the water will be treated. You are even welcome to swim if you can brave the chillier water temperatures.

Watch future newsletters for information on where an activity (Water Aerobics, Lap Swimming, etc.) will be held if that pool is not being heated.

NIGHTTIME REPAVING PROJECT -

STATE ROUTE 75 DETOURS

A two-mile stretch of State Route 75 (Orange Avenue) through the City of Coronado is in the process of getting overdue repairs. The project began on 9/22 at Avenida del Lunar (cul de sac south of Coronado Shores) and will continue through downtown Coronado to the Coronado Bay Bridge Plaza. The project is necessary to extend the life of the pavement and keep traffic flowing smoothly and includes removing pavement, laying new repaving material, and re-striping the pavement. Although the work will be done overnight (8pm – 5am), there will be detours and the work will be noisy at times. There will be no full closures on 3rd or 4th Avenues. The project will take a little more than a month to complete.

HOTEL DEL AMENDED MASTER PLAN – EXPANSION DECISION

The City Council voted on Tuesday 9/16 to approve the Amended Master Plan. The vote was 3-2. The City Council also voted 5-0 to approve the Tentative Map for the condo-hotel units. TENNIS INTEREST GROUP

It was a successful Summer for the Shores’ tennis community. Welcomed by six newly resurfaced courts, players were given the opportunity to participate in organized Round Robins, groove their strokes against a new ball machine, and participate in Group Clinics or take Private Lessons from resident professional, Gretchen Theodorou. In fact, based on the numbers provided by the L&R Office, hundreds of hours of play occurred each week during July and August. Thanks to the members of the Tennis Interest Group, and especially to Gretchen for helping to develop and promote a well-rounded tennis program! To stay connected to Shores’ tennis activities, players may send their e-mail address to Tennis Interest Group Chair Mike Brennan at ilikemike327@aol.com. A roster of players is being developed to make it easier to share tennis news via e-mail.

A REMINDER FOR DOG OWNERS

In an effort to help residents preserve Coronado’s quality of life – unique charm, appearance, and friendly atmosphere – the Police Department reminds residents of the importance of cleaning up after all of their family members, including their dogs. Doing so will prevent harmful bacteria from entering the storm drain system which goes untreated directly into the ocean – Coronado Shore’s front yard. Residents are required by law to pick up after their dogs whenever they are in a public place. Coronado Shores holds residents similarly responsible with its own rules and regulations for the common areas within the community. An easy way for residents to avoid problems with their neighbors is to make sure their dogs do not take advantage. Further, dogs may be off leash only at Dog Beach. They must be leashed if in the common areas of the community at Coronado Shores. (City of Coronado – Coronado Currents)

BEWARE OF DANGEROUS SITUATIONS –

CARJACKING PREVENTION

Carjacking is a serious and often violent form of vehicle theft. It is a crime of opportunity and usually occurs at: Intersections controlled by lights or signs; Garages, shopping malls and grocery stores; gas stations and car washes; and, freeway exits and entry ramps. The key to avoiding this crime is prevention. You can reduce your risk by considering the following precautions: Service your vehicle regularly to ensure it is working properly; When walking to your car, have your keys in your hand and enter quickly; Keep doors locked and windows up; Keep valuables out of view; Drive on well lit streets at night; If you feel you are being followed or if you think your car was hit intentionally, do not pull over and do not drive home – drive to a police station or other open business; and, take your keys, purse, and wallet with you when you leave your car. (National Safety Council)

SEPTEMBER L&R ACTIONS

v Favorable Net Income of $3,500 total from the audited 2007 Operating Budget will be refunded to the associations as a credit per the % formula.

v Net Operating Income through August is favorable to budget. Maintenance Expenses are unfavorable because liquid chlorine is being purchased for the pools as the salt cells are no longer effective. An expert’s opinion will be sought before a decision is made to stay with salt cells or switch to granular chlorine.

v The 2009 Operating Budget was approved at $2,083,894 and the 2009 Capital Replacement Budget was approved at $169,600.

v The Family Activities Summer Program was successful and was within budget.

v The Landscape Advisory Group recommended that over a period of time, the Australian Coral trees be considered for removal and replaced by appropriate alternatives due to safety issues. Decision will be made on a tree by tree basis with priority given based on the risk posed. L&R will vote at their October meeting.

v In October, L&R will vote on a recommendation by the Beach Club sub-Committee to impose a Friday Night Dance dress code.

v A motion to increase the fee for a photo id card from $20 to $25 failed.

v Scott Elevator was hired to conduct an independent inspection of the Beach Club handicap lift. The General Manger was directed to expedite obtaining an estimate for a ramp.

v A proposal on pool rules and enforcement of same, and a proposed resolution re enforcement of rules will be discussed at a security / enforcement workshop for L&R members.

v El Encanto proposed issuing photo id cards to units, not persons, which would allow owners of multiple units to have multiple photo id cards. The L&R Committee will vote on this proposed rule change at their October meeting.

v The Tennis Interest Group proposed rules modifications including adding to Rule 11: "In addition, lessons may only be given on courts 1, 6, 7, or 8 prior to 9:00am or after 10:30am. And those courts must be reserved one day in advance by calling 435-2533." This change is recommended by the Recreation Advisory Group. L&R will make a decision at their October meeting.

v Pursuant to a new law that will go into effect 12/20/2008, the pool and spa drain covers will be modified for safety reasons.
